Hermanus is a racially and religiously intolerant place. Just recently a shop was opened there, selling fabrics, souvenirs and (unfortunately for them) religious type figurines/icons from India and the east. Pressure groups from local churches picketed the shop, the owner (a white lady, but not that that matters) was harassed and told she was going to hell - the pressure got so bad that she was 'forced out' of the shop by her landlord, who then still held her liable to pay rent for the rest of the time left on the lease. You won't hear about these sorts of things, as people's voices are drowned out in the town if they don't conform to the norm... but personally I find this disgusting in a supposedly religiously free country...

I was one of the girls in this situation and I feel people should find out about more of these attacks. I have a very negative view of hermanus now and those boys made it very clear they do not want any Cape town people there at all. After being abused like this we came to find out of a few more attacks just like this one, Cape Town people being harrassed by hermanus boys just because we were in there town.

There have been many stories in the past of 'the locals' starting fights with tourists and the police not caring - not just recently but also but also over the past few weeks, in fact the last three weekends have all had similar incidents.
Its sad that a place that Hermanus - where I have been coming to two to three times a year since I was born (1988) has now turned into a place that tourists are not welcome.
